Urine Culture

DESCRIPTION:
Urine culture is a microbiological test that identifies the causative agents of urinary tract infections and tests their sensitivity to antibiotics. A properly collected urine culture sample is crucial for correct interpretation of the test and timely application of any necessary specific therapy.

DETERMINATION:
Sample: midstream of first morning urine collected in a sterile container. Deliver to the laboratory within 1 hour.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Urine culture is one of the diagnostic procedures when a urinary tract infection is suspected. By culturing on a specific nutrient medium, the causative agents of inflammation are isolated and identified if present in a certain quantity. Their sensitivity to antibiotics is also tested in order to implement appropriate therapy for treatment.

RESULTS:
Results are available in 3-5 days.
