Magnesium (serum or urine)

DESCRIPTION:
After potassium, magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation in the human body. It is of vital importance for the body and participates in many enzymatic and metabolic processes. It is a cofactor in all reactions in which ATP participates. Magnesium participates in the regulation of cell permeability and neuromuscular excitability.

DETERMINATION:
Magnesium is determined by the photometric colorimetric method. The sample for analysis is serum or plasma (not plasma obtained on EDTA). The sample is stable for 7 days at 2 to 8°C.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Low magnesium concentration is found in malabsorption syndrome, therapy with diuretics or aminoglycosides, hyperparathyroidism or diabetic acidosis. Elevated magnesium values are rare. Slight elevations can be found in uremia, chronic renal insufficiency, glomerulonephritis, Addison’s disease. Larger increases in magnesium values may occur after intensive antacid therapy.
