DESCRIPTION:
The C3 component is a component of the complement system, which consists of more than 30 plasma proteins and their receptors, which play an important role in the body’s defense against infection. Complement activation is a complex cascade of interconnected and conditioned enzymatic reactions. Activation of the complement system can take place in two ways. The first is the so-called classic way of activation, and it starts with the binding of the first complement component to the antibody, and then the other components are gradually activated.

Another way of activation is the so-called alternative path, which does not start with the activation of the first component, but with the C3 component, followed by other components. The end result of both modes of activation is a final complex that leads to the destruction (lysis) of a number of different types of cells, bacteria and viruses. C3 component is produced in: liver, macrophage, fibroblast, lymph cells. During complement activation, the C3 component is cleaved into C3a and C3b by the action of the enzyme C3 convertase. C3a is a mediator of inflammation, and C3b is an opsonin – it binds to the surface of microorganisms.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Elevated values indicate inflammation, and are present in acute phase reactions, rheumatic diseases, viral hepatitis, myocardial infarction, cancer, diabetes and pregnancy. Decreased values occur in congenital C3 deficiency in bones, acute glomerulonephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic liver diseases and disorders of the immune system.
