DESCRIPTION:
Along with sodium, chlorides are the main factors in the regulation of osmotic pressure and acid-base balance.
DETERMINATION:
Chlorides are determined by the ion selective method. The sample for analysis is serum. The serum must not be hemolytic.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
An increase in chloride concentration occurs in states of severe dehydration, then when taking large amounts of chloride, severe tubular damage and patients with cystic fibrosis. Decreased chloride concentration is found in metabolic acidosis, long-term vomiting and chronic pyelonephritis.
RESULT:
The reference interval depends on gender, age and the method of determination. The reference interval is displayed on each validated result.
