DESCRIPTION:
Proteins are the building blocks of the human body. They are highly diverse, yet specific to individual organs and tissues. They are composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Proteins are characterized by containing nitrogen, in a constant ratio of approximately 16% of total proteins. Based on their composition, proteins are divided into simple and complex. Simple proteins are composed solely of amino acids, while complex proteins, in addition to their protein structure, also contain a so-called non-protein or prosthetic group. According to their prosthetic group, proteins have specific names, e.g., glycoproteins, lipoproteins, hemoproteins. Proteinurias can be renal, prerenal, and postrenal.
DETERMINATION:
Proteins in urine are detected by the colorimetric biuret method. The sample for analysis is a 24-hour urine collection. Sample stability is one month at 2 to 8°C.
RESULT:
The reference interval depends on sex, age, and the determination method. The reference interval is displayed on every validated report.
