Testing for sexually transmitted infections

Anonymous testing, self-sampling, and support in choosing the right test are available.

For men, testing is done using a urine and/or blood sample. For women, depending on the type of test, a urine sample, cervical swab, blood sample, or a combination of these samples may be used.

Sexual health

What are sexually transmitted diseases?

Sexually transmitted diseases are infections transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact, and the causative agents can be bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. They are not necessarily transmitted exclusively through sexual contact, but also through:

When we talk about sexually transmitted diseases, we most often think of urogenital infections such as urinary tract infections and bacterial and fungal inflammations. Bacterial prostatitis is also common in men.

Sexually transmitted infections, due to their frequency and potential permanent consequences, represent a significant problem in both sexes, and the causative agents do not always cause symptoms. This is precisely why PCR diagnostics plays an important role in detecting infections and preventing their transmission.

Should you get tested?

Answer 5 short questions. Based on your answers and risk factors described in CDC and BASHH clinical guidelines, you will receive a recommendation on whether you should get tested and how urgent it is.

Risk assessment Question 1 of 5
Step 1 of 5 — Current situation
Do you currently have any of the following symptoms?
Symptoms help determine the urgency and scope of testing.
Step 2 of 5 — Time frame
When was your last sexual contact with a new or potentially risky partner?
This determines the optimal time for testing—it does not change the recommendation on whether you should get tested.
Step 3 of 5 — Number of partners
How many sexual partners have you had in the last 6 months?
This is one of the key factors in assessing clinical risk (CDC / BASHH guidelines).
Step 4 of 5 — Protection
How often have you used condoms in the last 6 months?
Consistent condom use significantly reduces the risk of most STDs.
Step 5 of 5 — Medical history
Have you been diagnosed or treated for a sexually transmitted disease in the last 12 months?
According to BASHH guidelines for testing frequency (2023), a diagnosis of bacterial STD within the last 12 months increases the recommended testing frequency.

Simple procedure

Sampling - simple and fast, in the privacy of your home

Self-sampling kits, whether vaginal swab or urine, can be picked up at any of our 11 locations. At each location, we also provide blood collection services if a serum sample is required for the test you have selected. After you pick up the sampling kit, you can simply perform the procedure at home or at our facility, at your choice. Once the sample is collected, simply return it to our location.

Poliklinika Analiza, the only one in Croatia, has enabled women the option of self-sampling, which allows them to independently collect a sample for testing for sexually transmitted diseases, such as HPV, without the need to visit a doctor.

laboratory analysis

Reliable diagnostics of sexually transmitted infections

Laboratory tests greatly contribute to the control and prevention of urogenital infections. Although serological tests are still used to detect pathogens, a negative result of such a test does not exclude their presence. Therefore, most turn to PCR testing, which has much higher specificity and sensitivity compared to other laboratory methods.

The most common viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can be detected by molecular tests are:

FOR WHOM

Who is testing intended for?

Testing is recommended for people with symptoms, after risky contact, when changing partners, and for anyone who wants to discreetly check their sexual health.

All sexually active individuals

Regardless of gender, age, or sexual orientation, everyone who is sexually active is at risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

People who change sexual partners

If you frequently change sexual partners, testing is recommended to ensure you have not transmitted or received an infection.

People with symptoms or at risk

If you have symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases, such as pain, itching, or discharge, or have been exposed to risk, such as unprotected sexual contact, testing is the recommended next step.

Pregnant women

Testing for sexually transmitted diseases is part of routine prenatal testing to ensure the health of the mother and child during pregnancy and childbirth.

People subject to regular testing

People at increased risk, such as intravenous drug users or people with HIV, should regularly undergo testing for sexually transmitted diseases to detect and treat any infections in a timely manner.
