TSH

DESCRIPTION:
This test measures the amount of TSH in the blood, which indicates thyroid diseases. TSH is produced in the pituitary gland and instructs the thyroid gland to synthesize hormones. The test is performed for the diagnosis and monitoring of hypothyroidism therapy. Thyrotropin (TSH) is a hormone secreted from the anterior pituitary lobe under the stimulating effect of thyroliberin (TRH = thyroid-releasing factor = Thyrotropin-releasing hormone). TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) controls thyroid function. The regulation of T3 and T4 hormone secretion represents a negative feedback mechanism involving: the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid, and the concentration of free T3 and T4 in circulation. Thyroliberin (TRH = thyroid-releasing factor = Thyrotropin-releasing hormone) from the hypothalamus stimulates TSH secretion from the adenohypophysis, and TSH stimulates the synthesis and secretion of T3 and T4 hormones.

DETERMINATION:
Method of determination: ECLIA. The sample for analysis is serum or plasma (heparin or EDTA). The sample is stable for 7 days at 2-8°C, and 1 month at -20°C.
