Transglutaminase IgG

DESCRIPTION:
Since selective IgA deficiency is quite common in patients with celiac disease, in cases where the clinical presentation of celiac disease does not correlate with laboratory findings of normal or even decreased values of IgA anti-endomysial antibodies and antibodies against tissue transglutaminase, it is often necessary to determine total IgA as well, and in such cases, use IgG against tissue transglutaminase for serological diagnosis. Celiac disease occurs in genetically predisposed individuals after ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat and certain other grains. The treatment for celiac disease is avoiding gluten-containing foods, but a poor response to this form of therapy is seen in 30% of patients, resulting in persistent or recurrent symptoms.

Celiac disease is a unique autoimmune disease, unique because the environmental causative factor is known. Celiac disease occurs in genetically predisposed individuals after ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat and certain other grains. It was once thought that celiac disease was only a disease of young children; however, current knowledge indicates that celiac disease can be diagnosed at any age and can affect numerous organs in the human body. The treatment for celiac disease is avoiding gluten-containing foods, but a poor response to this form of therapy is seen in 30% of patients, resulting in persistent or recurrent symptoms.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The clinical symptomatology of gluten enteropathy differs with respect to age. Infants and young children manifest it as diarrhea, abdominal distension, and poor growth, while vomiting, irritability, anorexia, and constipation are also very common. In older children and adolescents, the disease often manifests through extra-intestinal symptoms such as reduced growth, anemia, and neurological symptoms. The role of the gastrointestinal system can be presented through: general symptoms: general weakness, low blood pressure, slightly elevated body temperature; gastrointestinal symptoms: inflammation of the tongue, mouth ulcers, diarrhea, food refusal, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, visible intestinal peristalsis, abdominal pain and bloating, anemia, bleeding tendency, edema, paresthesia, nocturnal enuresis; musculoskeletal symptoms: muscle and bone pain, spontaneous fractures, poor tooth enamel; neuropsychiatric symptoms: peripheral neuropathy, anxiety, depression, changes in cognitive functions, irritability, behavioral disorders; reproductive: menstrual cycle disturbances, reduced male and female fertility, impotence, spontaneous miscarriages; skin symptoms: various rashes, numerous pigmentations, redness, petechiae or hematomas, dermatitis herpetiformis;
