Transglutaminase IgA

DESCRIPTION:
This blood test (serum) measures IgA antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (tTg-IgA), enabling the screening of individuals with celiac disease. Celiac disease is a chronic, immune-mediated small intestine disease, or rather, an intolerance of the body to gluten – a protein found in cereals such as wheat, rye, and barley. In genetically susceptible individuals, gluten-sensitive T-lymphocytes are activated in the presence of gluten-derived proteins. This inflammatory response leads to villous atrophy of the small intestine mucosa. It is one of the most common chronic gastroenterological diseases. Celiac disease can manifest at any age, but most frequently in young children and between the ages of thirty and forty.

DETERMINATION:
Sample: serum

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
It often presents with non-specific symptoms such as fatigue or malaise, as well as symptoms of other small intestine diseases. The most common visible signs of celiac disease include: -vomiting, -abdominal distension, -diarrhea, -bulky, shiny, and foul-smelling stools, -irritability, -flaccid musculature, -fatigue. This test determines specific IgA class antibodies; therefore, a congenital complete deficiency of this immunoglobulin can lead to false-negative tTg-IgA test results.

INDICATIONS FOR TESTING:According to your doctor’s recommendation, if you frequently experience abdominal pain and bloating accompanied by diarrhea, if you are malnourished or consistently losing weight, if you have skin changes of unknown cause, if you suffer from anemia of unknown cause, if a close relative has celiac disease, or if you suffer from chronic or autoimmune diseases (Type I diabetes, autoimmune diseases, chronic hepatitis, Down syndrome, microscopic colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome).

RESULTS:
Results are available in 3–4 weeks.
