DESCRIPTION:
Thyroglobulin is produced only in thyroid tissue, making Tg an extremely specific marker for thyroid function. Complete absence of TG is definitive proof of the absence of any thyroid tissue function. Since functional thyroid tissue is the only source of circulating Tg, measurement of this prohormone in patients who have had their thyroid removed is of great value and assists clinicians in detecting local and metastatic thyroid tissue. Thyroglobulin is secreted in excess in various situations where thyroid tissue is overactive, inflamed, or proliferative. Undetectable serum Tg levels suggest absence or suppression of thyroid tissue. Measured serum TG concentration is a measure for assessing thyroid activity.
DETERMINATION:
Determination method: ECLIA. Sample for analysis is serum or plasma (EDTA or heparin). Sample is stable for 24 hours at 15-25°C, 3 days at 2-8°C, 1 month at -20°C.
