DESCRIPTION:
To ensure accurate results, patients should avoid mechanical irritation of the prostate (e.g., rectal examination, biopsy, or prostate resection) for 72 hours prior to blood sampling. Intense physical activity should also be avoided. For instance, cycling can lead to elevated PSA levels. PSA testing should be conducted before surgical procedures or 6 weeks post-procedure. Chemically, PSA is a glycoprotein with a molecular mass of 34,000 daltons. It is isolated from human prostate extract. It is present in low concentrations in the blood of all adult men. It is produced by both normal and abnormal prostate cells. While it is exclusively produced in prostate tissue, it is not tumor-specific, as its levels can also be elevated in benign conditions.
DETERMINATION:
Method of determination: CMIA. The sample for analysis is serum. The sample is stable for 24 hours at 2-8°C, or for a longer period at -20°C.
RESULT:
Reference interval: less than 4 µg/L
