Phosphorus (serum)

DESCRIPTION:
Phosphorus is an essential mineral for bone formation and every cell in the body needs it for its normal function. About 85% of phosphorus in the body is found in bones and teeth.

DETERMINATION:
Phosphorus is determined by the direct photometric method. The sample for analysis is serum or plasma. The sample for analysis must not be hemolytic. The serum sample is stable for 7 days at 2-8°C. The urine sample is stable for 10 days at 2-8°C.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
A low concentration of phosphorus is found in hyperparathyroidism, hypovitaminosis D, reduced food intake, reduced absorption in the intestine, increased urinary excretion, renal tubulopathy, etc. An increased concentration of inorganic phosphate is found in: hypoparathyroidism, hypervitaminosis D, chronic kidney failure and bone healing

The reference interval depends on gender, age and work method. The reference interval is displayed on each validated result.
