Fibrinogen

DESCRIPTION:
Fibrinogen is one of the most important plasma proteins (belongs to the beta globulin group) that is produced in the liver and plays a very important role in the blood clotting process. The normal level of fibrinogen in the blood is between 2 and 4 g/l of blood. When tissue injury occurs, fibrinogen enables the formation of clots and thus prevents large blood loss. In the absence of fibrinogen, even small injuries would be life-threatening. Conversely, a large amount of fibrinogen can cause the formation of unwanted clots that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Excess fibrinogen leads to thicker blood, which reduces circulation and the flow of oxygen and nutrients to cells, resulting in fatigue, muscle pain, and memory loss.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Elevated values of fibrinogen can be found in pregnancy. Fibrinogen is an acute phase protein, so its increase is also associated with inflammation, tumors, trauma and burns. Chronic active inflammatory processes such as rheumatic diseases or collagen vascular diseases are associated with a prolonged increase in fibrinogen levels. REDUCED values occur in acute and chronic liver diseases, in ascites or acute hemorrhage and burns or in increased degradation (shock and cancer).
