The HIV virus spread greatly in the 1980s and infected about 34 million people. The disease proceeds without symptoms, until the immune system is so damaged that other infections can penetrate the body and lead to death. The analysis of HIV-relevant genes makes it possible to determine the risk of infection, predict the course of the disease and optimize drug therapy. Based on the genetic profile, the composition of the CCRP5 receptor is determined, and thus the risk for HIV infection is assessed.
A virus can be described as a copying machine that inserts its genes into the interior of a human cell. An infected cell cannot distinguish its own genes from those of the virus and activates them. Newly formed viruses then leave the cells in different ways and infect new cells, where the same cycle takes place again. Each virus needs specific receptors for a specific cell in order to enter the cell. In this case, these are the HIV receptors CD-4 and CCR5. For each receptor there is a human gene that tells the cell how to build receptors. About 20% of people have a genetic variation in one of the genes and therefore produce half of the CCR5-receptor. This leads to a small surface area for the virus to attack and reduces the likelihood of infection.
