DESCRIPTION:
Cytokeratins are structural proteins of cells. They are intermediate filaments secreted by epithelial cells and are markers for the differentiation of epithelial cells. Cytokeratin 19 consists of 400 amino acids. The name cyfra 21-1 refers to a fragment of cytokeratin 19. Unlike cytokeratin, cytokeratin fragments are soluble in serum and can be detected. Cytokeratins 19 are represented almost in the entire organism (body), however, they are especially accumulated in the lungs and in malignant lung tumors. By determining its fragment (cyfra 21-1) in the serum, the type of tumor can be recognized or the course of treatment monitored.
DETERMINATION:
Determination method: CMIA Sample for analysis is serum or plasma (EDTA). Sample stability: 48 hours at 25°C, up to 7 days at 2-8°C.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Lung cancer is a malignant disease that develops in the lungs or bronchi. It is the leading cause of death among cancers. The biggest risk factor for the development of lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking is responsible for 90% of lung cancer. In addition to smoking, several other environmental factors are known to increase the risk of developing lung cancer, namely: passive smoking, alcoholism, asbestos, radioactive uranium dust, radon gas, increased cholesterol levels and excessive fat intake in the body. Age, race, gender and genetic inheritance also play a role in the development of this disease. Lung carcinomas depending on the appearance of the cells under the microscope. For therapeutic reasons, they are divided into two main subtypes: 1. small cell lung cancer (microcellular) and 2. non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell cancer is divided into three main types: 1. squamous cell carcinoma (squamous, planocellular) 2. adenocarcinoma 3. large cell carcinoma (macrocellular) Lung cancer can be associated with the following tumor markers: PTH, parathyroid hormone – an elevated level of PTH protein can help distinguish between lung cancer and pleural (pleural) cancer and other diseases;
