Macular degeneration is a painless condition that affects the retina of the human eye. It typically begins to slowly affect individuals over 50 years of age and impairs the center of the visual field. To date, scientific research has identified several genes and polymorphisms associated with an increased risk of developing macular degeneration. The following genes influence disease development (HTRA1 rs11200638; CFH rs1061170; LOC387715 rs10490924). Through genetic analysis of these genetic polymorphisms, individuals receive information about their risk of developing the disease, as well as the need for antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, EPA, DHA) and the necessity of regular ophthalmological examinations.
