DESCRIPTION:
Vitamin D, or calciferol, is an anti-rachitic vitamin, often referred to as the sunshine vitamin. For historical reasons, it is classified among vitamins, although by most characteristics, it is a hormone (steroid structure). Together with parathyroid hormone, it regulates the concentration of calcium ions in plasma. Before its discovery, many people, especially children, suffered from rickets. Therefore, it received particular attention in the past. Today, it is known that this vitamin can prevent and treat rickets. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can be stored in the body. It is introduced into the body through food, exposure to sunlight, and the use of multivitamin supplements.
