They are present in the serum at the time of the onset of symptoms of the disease, reach their highest level approximately 4 weeks after infection, and usually disappear within 3 to 6 months from the onset of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DETERMINATION:<\/strong><br \/>\nSAMPLE: Serum<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe hepatitis A virus is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. The simplest procedure for proving acute HAV infection is the detection of specific IgM anti-HAV antibodies in the patient&#8217;s serum. Clinical picture: incubation with the hepatitis A virus lasts for varying lengths of time (from 2 to 6 weeks). At the beginning of the disease, non-specific signs prevail: fever, headache, fatigue, general weakness, and after a few days pain in the central part of the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, urine becomes darker and the stool looks light, the skin and whites of the eyes become increasingly yellow.
