DESCRIPTION:<\/strong>
\nThe glycolytic enzyme enolase (2-phosphate-D-glycerate hydrolase) consists of several dimers. (aa, ab, ag and gg). Enolase isoenzymes are composed of 3 subunits a, b and g. In the human brain, 3 isoenzymes aa, ab and gg are found. Isoenzyme aa and gg are known as neuron specific enolase (NSE) and are found in nervous tissue and endocrine glands. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is an isoenzyme of the glycolytic pathway that can only be found in nervous tissue, endocrine glands, and in malignant tumors of these organs.<\/p>\n

DETERMINATION:<\/strong>
\nDetermination method: ECLIA. The sample for analysis is serum. The sample must be centrifuged within one hour of extraction. Hemolyzed samples are not suitable for analysis. The sample is stable for 6 hours at 15-25\u00b0C, 24 hours at 2-8\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:<\/strong>
\nNSE is found in tumors of the central nervous system, neuroblastoma, small cell lung cancer, Wilms tumor, melanoma, and thyroid, kidney, testicular, and pancreatic cancers. However, as a tumor marker it is used exclusively for the diagnosis of neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer (microcellular carcinoma). Measurement of NSE in these two diseases provides information about disease stage, prognosis and response to treatment.<\/p>\n
