The basic function of the complement system is participation in the defense against infectious agents (antigen\/antibody reactions) and in the prevention of autoimmune diseases. The ultimate goal of complement activation is lysis (destruction) of various types of cells, bacteria and viruses. The role of the complement system in the body&#8217;s defense is extremely important, so testing that system is necessary in assessing the state of the body&#8217;s non-specific defense. In practice, the C3 and C4 components are most often determined. C4 activates mast cells (cells that secrete histamine, the substance that triggers an acute allergic reaction).<\/p>\n<p><strong>DETERMINATION:<\/strong><br \/>\nSAMPLE: serum<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:<\/strong><br \/>\nDetermination of the concentration of components C3 and C4 of the complement system is indispensable in patients suspected of having a systemic connective tissue disease. Elevated concentrations indicate inflammation, and decreased concentrations indicate an innate deficit or consumption caused by the presence of circulating immune complexes. Causes of elevated C4 values: 1. Inflammation 2. Malignant diseases 3. Diabetes mellitus 4. Amyloidosis Causes of decreased C4 values: 1. Congenital C4 deficiency (and 2. Immune complex disease 3. Hypergammaglobulinemic 4. Cryoglobulinemia 5. Hereditary-hereditary angioedema 6. Active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) 7. Serum sickness 8. Chronic active hepatitis 9. Liver cirrhosis 10.
