It is also known as the Quick test. The test measures the time required for blood clotting to occur in a blood sample (plasma). The result is expressed as a percentage or ratio (&gt;0.70), or as an INR value (International Normalized Ratio) to standardize results from different laboratories. Prothrombin time analysis is necessary if you are preparing for a surgical procedure, if you wish to take or are already taking oral contraceptives, if you have a hereditary or acquired clotting disorder, if you have liver disease, subcutaneous bleeding (hematomas), and as part of monitoring anticoagulation therapy (if you are taking marevan, warfarin). For this analysis, you must be fasting (as eating a meal immediately before blood collection causes lipemia which can interfere with prothrombin time measurement). NOTE for persons on oral anticoagulant therapy: DO NOT TAKE medication immediately before blood collection!      <\/p>\n<p><strong>DETERMINATION:<\/strong><br \/>\nSample: PLASMA<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ELEVATED<\/strong>: Prolonged prothrombin time (expressed as shorter or lower PT) may occur due to hereditary deficiency of the prothrombin complex (factor II), hereditary or acquired deficiency of factor V or its inhibitors, during therapy with vitamin K antagonists (coumarin derivatives), in liver diseases, vitamin K deficiency, physiologically in newborns due to underdeveloped coagulation system, DIC, and in lupus anticoagulant.<strong><br \/>\nDECREASED<\/strong>: Decreased prothrombin time can be found in acute alcoholism, liver cirrhosis.
