It typically begins to slowly affect individuals over 50 years of age and impairs the center of the visual field. To date, scientific research has identified several genes and polymorphisms associated with an increased risk of developing macular degeneration. The following genes influence disease development (HTRA1 rs11200638; CFH rs1061170; LOC387715 rs10490924).
