Thyroxine (T4)

DESCRIPTION:
Thyroxine (T4) is the most important product of the thyroid gland. In the bloodstream, approximately 90% of thyroid hormones consist of thyroxine (T4). It is a hormone completely released by the thyroid gland. Its release occurs as needed, under the influence of TSH hormone. T4 is crucial for the functioning of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis. It also plays a role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, respiratory rate, sympathetic nervous system function (and numerous vital functions), menstrual cycle in women, as well as numerous other processes in the body.

DETERMINATION:
Determination method: ECLIA. Sample for analysis is serum or plasma (EDTA or heparin). Sample is stable for 7 days at 2-8°C, 30 days at -20°C.

RESULT:
The reference interval depends on gender, age, and the determination method. The reference interval is displayed on each validated report.
