Fasting is not required before the blood draw, but it is necessary to discontinue antihistamines 5-6 days prior to testing. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
IgE synthesis primarily occurs in the respiratory and digestive tracts, as well as in lymph nodes. Otherwise harmless antigens, such as pollen or dust mites, stimulate B-lymphocytes to produce specific IgE at the entry site into the organism. During subsequent contact of the antigen with the sensitized specific cell, bound IgE cross-links, the cell degranulates, and inflammatory mediators are released, causing symptoms of hay fever, asthma, or atopic eczema. Elevated IgE levels can be found in atopic dermatitis, seasonal hay fever, and certain hereditary immunodeficiency conditions, particularly in cases of cellular immune system immunodeficiency.
