Serum protein electrophoresis

DESCRIPTION:
Using the electrophoretic technique, serum proteins are separated into 5 main fractions: albumins, alpha1 globulins, alpha2 globulins, beta globulins, gamma globulins. 50-60% of blood plasma proteins fall into albumins, they are created in the liver, participate in maintaining the normal distribution of water in the body (colloid osmotic pressure), transport various metabolites and some drugs within the body. Alpha1 globulins consist of: α1 lipoprotein, α1 antitrypsin, acid glycoprotein. Alpha 2 globulins include: α2 macroglobulin, α2 lipoprotein, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin and Hs glycoprotein. Beta globulins include: β lipoprotein, transferrin, hemopexin, plasminogen, β glycoprotein, fibrinogen. Gamma globulins contain immunoglobulins IgM, IgA, IgG, IgD, IgE.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The ratio of individual fractions can be disturbed in different ways, depending on the disease causing the disturbance: acute and chronic inflammation, liver diseases, monoclonal and polyclonal gammopathy, malignant tumors, protein loss (e.g. in nephrotic syndrome), malnutrition, hyperimmunoglobulinemia. It is used as a screening test for monoclonal gammopathy. Patients with liver cirrhosis often have decreased albumin and elevated globulin fractions. Cancer patients have decreased γ globulins and albumins, and elevated α and β globulins, the same is true for nephrotic syndrome.
