DESCRIPTION:
The serum of healthy people contains immunoglobulins of classes IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the least abundant immunoglobulin in the serum, only after encountering a foreign antigen does the immune system react by creating IgE antibodies that mediate hypersensitivity or allergy reactions. IgE synthesis takes place mainly in the respiratory and digestive tracts and in the lymph nodes. Harmless, polyvalent antigens, such as pollen or mites, stimulate B-lymphocytes to produce specific IgE at the point of entry into the body.
During the next contact of the polyvalent antigen with the sensitized specific cell, the bound IgE is cross-linked, the cell is degranulated and inflammatory mediators are released that cause symptoms of hay fever, asthma or atopic eczema.
